The Songs
This is just my
recollection and thoughts on the songs I've written for the first Pork
Sirens album, 'From Wonderful To What If? They have their faults no
doubt and maybe don't reach the heights of my musical hero's songs, but because
they're mine I tend to look upon them with grace and favour as if they were
my offspring and in someway I guess they are. This may be a strange view to
take on what is essentially just a bunch of rock and roll songs, but at
least it's an honest opinion. The thing is I wanted the songs to
exist and not to die so I had to think of a way to achieve this and because
I can't sing or play guitar very well (calling me a musician is like
calling someone who can change the plugs on a car a mechanic!) I had to get
other people to help me realise this dream. I felt I had a limited amount
inside of me and I wanted to get it out, I know I'm mining a pretty thin
seem, dredging a shallow well, you choose the metaphor! But I think each of
us has something to give its just finding the ways and means. Also as this
project moved forward I began wanting the Pork Sirens to mean something, to
leave something worthwhile behind, and I think with this album we've given
it a good go.
One of my favourite lines from a song is Lou Reeds 'Some Kind Of Love'
where he sings, 'between thought and expression, there lies a lifetime';
I think that sums up the creative process perfectly, and anyone who has
tried to get their thoughts out onto something tangible might concur.
Anyway, I've tried to explain below how the songs came about, to be honest
I don't always know where they come from, they just sort of turn up, they
surprise me most times! I don't want to go into deep detail (just an
overview now and again) of what they're all about, that's for you to work
out if you care to, they're not that cryptic! Follow the link to the lyrics
if you wish. As I've mentioned my singing and playing skills are not so hot
but never the less I wanted to make some kind of a contribution on each
song, so I refer to this as my 'Hitchcock Moments.' Some of you may know
that Hollywood film director Alfred Hitchcock used to make little cameo appearances in his films
so I've attempted to emulate him in my own little way.
