More Senses Than One I had a dream, well not one as momentous as Dr. Martin Luther King's but a dream where I felt I was floating over a dry seabed in a death like state. Not much of a dream, granted but then I had another dream where I dreamt I was having a relationship with the Roman emperor Augustus's daughter Julia. It got me thinking, I'd heard that some people believe that sleep is a half way house between life and death. So I started to imagine a somnambulant situation where two people on either side of the divide could meet. At first I was going to use Julia as the person on the 'other side', but then I came across the ancient Greek story of Orpheus and his wife Eurydice (Google it!). It was similar to my dream so I thought I'd incorporate the Orpheus legend as well. That's why the middle part of the song sort of gets ethereal and other worldly sounding, well that's the atmosphere we were trying to get. I think the vocal part by Wendelynne in that section is excellent and sends a shiver down my spine when I hear it. Some of the lyrics were written years ago in a lyric I had, called 'I am a new boy in more senses than one', which was a line I got from a Charles Dickens novel (I think it was 'David Copperfield'), the bit about standing in the shadows could have been from one of his novels as well. The theme of the lyrics was re-written after the aforementioned dreams. As for Julia, well she used to put it about a lot in ancient Rome, she didn't care who she did it with or where it took place, in fact her father the emperor was so disgusted by her behaviour that he had her banished from Rome and no one knows what became of her - but I do and 'the girl don't give a damn' -no, no, no, no, no, no, no!
Hitchcock Moments: I sing backing vocals on this track and play some 12-string guitar in the middle section. Dave had to stick some blu-tack on the strings because I kept hitting the wrong ones - how embarrassing is that? See I told you I couldn't play guitar.
